TV spinoff -- how many sq. ft. per person?

Postby cathie » Mon Sep 16, 2013 9:26 am

The TV thread got me thinking -- most people probably have a lot more room than we do. Housing is so expensive around here ('tho not as bad as parts of CA!) so even though we live in what is considered an affluent town (median house price is something like $700K - not ours, lol) the houses are generally pretty small until you are into the $2million range. When we bought the house 10 years ago we had 1800 sq. ft and the renovation we did after ds2 was born brought that to 2,100 sq. ft. -- and most importantly, added a bathroom for us so we don't share with the kids anymore.

As a family of 5 we have 420 sq. ft per person. So, what do you have?

Biggest house we owned was our last one, main 2 floors was 2700 sq foot, add in finished basement for about another 1000 sq feet, so around 3700 total.

Our current home is 2380 sq feet, and it is JUST perfect for one kid at home and 2 parents. Will be the perfect size to empty nest in. One less bedroom, and 2 less floors to clean, and 2 less bathrooms! whoo hoo.

Your house is still far larger then mine and you have 3 less people. Want to trade? ;)

Our house is 4900 sq ft. So we have 816 sq ft per person. But 2 kids have to share a bedroom even though the house is large, it is only a 4 bedroom. We have a lot of living areas (6 - family room, formal living room, study/office, gameroom, media room, bonus room over garage that we use as play/toy/gym room). Seems excessive but with 4 boys at very different ages, it is nice for them to have lots of play/entertaining space when they have friends over. In Texas you get a lot more for your money!

The biggest house we lived in was our Kasnsas City house. It was 5200 with including the finsihed walk-out basement.

Our home has 3357 sq ft finished with another 1200 or so unfinished in the basement (main floor master so our footprint is HUGE). When we bought the house there were 5 of us so over 670 sq ft/person. Add in the basement at it goes to over 900 sq ft per person! Now that we are down to 4, it's even more room per person.

The one thing we noticed was that housing prices are VERY CHEAP in our area. A house this size in Colorado would have been well over $800k. Here in rural PA, it was $350k, exactly what we sold our 1800 sq ft home in Colorado for.

The problem with this house is it is configured poorly. The square footage is not representative of the usable space.

My current house is about 2800 sq ft. for five people. 560 per person.

We are moving November 10th, to a 1200 sq ft apt home. 240 per person.

I'm not worried about it. I would never buy a house this size again. looking forward to simplifying. We have lived in smaller quarters too, so this is no big. :)

I am so happy to downsize I can't even tell you! I love our one story home and love the floor plan, it is really well laid out. I don't miss having stairs or having extra floors to keep clean or heat/cool. The only real complaint I can think about this house (minus missing our beautiful huge deck) is the garage is soooo small. It is 2 cars, but really only a sedan or smaller sized cars. No way you can fit a mini van or an SUV in it - *IF* you have actual stuff in the garage. It's very shallow!

Andrea, you found a place!! Exciting.

OUr house is 2340, so Fred and I have a lot of space ;) There was a time when we wanted a larger home, and I am so happy we didn't upsize.

Fast! When are you moving? Can't wait to hear all about it and see pictures after you decorate? Are you going to be able to fit all your household things in this one...furniture, etc?

Congrats Andrea!

As soon as Sean is done with college we're going to downsize. Not so much on house size, but on acreage. The upkeep on the yard is killing us. It was awesome when the kids were/are home, but after they are gone we want very low maintenance. For house size, when Brett is home we have ~550 sq ft each. When he's not we have ~730 sq ft each. Our floor plan is VERY open, so although our house isn't huge, it feels bigger than it is.

2100 Sq ft which is 420 sq ft/person [5 people - 3 adults, 1 teen. 1 child]

our previous house was 1200 sq ft which was 200 sq ft/person (6 people - 3 adults, 1 teen, 2 children)... and looking at that figure makes me realise why this house seems SO much bigger, it's over double.

Thanks Wanda and Tina. :)

Wanda, November 10th. :) I will only be taking a fraction of what we own. We are replacing quite a few things for more space conscious items and are already working on the decor ideas. ;)

We have 2,400 sq feet, so that's 600 per person. I find it just enough, but dislike the layout.
