Good series for 10 y.o. boy?

Good series for 10 y.o. boy?

Postby cathie » Thu Mar 28, 2013 8:39 pm

DS1 has (finally!) begun to read. Well, I mean something other than Captain Underpants and Wimpy Kid, lol. It's such a joy to finally see him enjoying it after so many years of struggle.

It started this fall when he picked up Rick Riordan's Lost Hero. He's now read the entire Percy Jackson series, and the Kane Chronicles, and the Heroes of Olympus. The next Riordan book will be out this fall, so that means we have some time to fill between now and then.

The only non-Riordan books I have been able to find that interest him are those in the Artemis Fowl series but he doesn't have many of them left.

Any suggestions of other books he might like?

Not sure if it helps but starting at 10 victor starting reading the goosebumps series and he has read all of them at this point. He would spend hours at a time just reading those books.

Victor also said The Ranger's Apprentice is a good series.

Ranger's Apprentice is what immediately came to mind for me; it is a wonderful series (try to read them in order, as they do build on one another).

Brian is another who love the Goosebumps books, any most anything by Roald Dahl. I think his favorite book ever was White Fang by Jack London. We collected most of the cheaper illustrated classics and my kids enjoyed almost all of them - can't go wrong with the classics!

ditto anything by Roald Dahl.

But my kids would also recommend

The Alchemyst series http://www.amazon.com/Alchemyst-Secrets ... 0385736002

The Warriors series http://www.amazon.com/Warriors-Dawn-Cla ... rin+hunter

But V said the Warriors for some reason is more aimed at girls, and said the boys in her class are all reading this series:

NERDs
Wired
The Guardian Series
The Seems

Those are the ones that Keefe is currently reading and he too just started really reading about 6 months ago just before he turned 11. Not that he couldn't but he didn't do it for fun of his own accord till recently.

My dd is stuck on the Percy Jacson series too! She is counting the days until the next one comes out.

I know the books they really liked at that age were the Hatchet Series.

I think it is a good age to try Harry Potter, too.

THe others have suggested some others we have liked as well.

Thought of a few others: The Narnia books (start with The Lion etc., and then figure out the order in which they make sense, which is not the order in which they were written...I think it would be Prince Caspian, then Voyage of the Dawn Treader, but I might have those switched, and then the others). Also, The Castle in the Attic and The Battle for the Castle; only two books there, but they are lots of fun.

Does anyone recall the name of the series about the goofy young knights in training at the dysfunctional school for knights? It is a silly series, easy reads with lots of jokes and word play.
