What color eggs do you buy?

Postby Tammy » Mon Jul 09, 2012 2:57 pm

I was shopping at Target the other day and picked up eggs. All they had were white, so I grabbed them with everything else I needed, but I realized that the only time I normally buy white eggs is Easter (for coloring). Here in Maine the freshest eggs are brown, since local farms don't offer white. Just curious where else brown is the norm -- and where white is more prevalent.

usually white because that's what's available in the 2.5 dozen packs and we go through one of those a week on average.

I get brown when DH's coworker has an overabundance :) They are AWESOME!

Brown and green. I buy them from a guy at work and he has hens that lay green eggs. I love the green ones so he makes sure I have at least 1 every week.

Mostly white, because they're cheaper.

Didn't know how to vote because I buy both, but it drives me crazy; dh says brown eggs freak him out so I have to buy white, but before he made his request I bought brown because I want cage-free eggs. Can't find any white cage-free ones. :(

Neither, we get eggs from our chickens! But our chickens lay brown eggs, and before we had them, I always bought brown eggs because they were local and fresh.

I vote neither as we have chickens and don't "buy" them. We do have hens which lay brown and white (that is some brown and some lay white - not a mixed color egg)!

I don't like eggs so I just buy what ever is cheapest and the kids are happy.

We get eggs from my in laws. They're green, white or brown. When I do buy eggs from the store, I try to get brown, but they're expensive!

I also get them from a friend with chickens - those are green, pink or brown usually.

The color of the eggs does not indicate that they're fresher. You can get just as fresh white eggs as brown eggs. Do you know what determines the color of the eggs? Don't laugh...the color of the chicken's earlobes and feathers. If they're white, the eggs are white, if they're brown, they're brown. There is NO difference except the color between the two. See American Egg Board (click The Hen for details)

Just had this "argument" with the husband. Of course I was right. :D

both, I guess. Our chicken eggs come from a local rancher up here, so our eggs are usually brown, sometimes green, or ivory with speckles. Just depends on which of his hens layed my eggs that week. We also buy at least a dozen duck eggs a week, and his ducks only lay white eggs. :P

Did I mention I have four chickens of my own? Yeah, no eggs. Yet. They are due to start laying soon, but even when we have had laying hens, I have always had to supplement with someone else's eggs. I never buy from the store because they always make me sick. They have since I was a kid. When I eat farm fresh eggs though, I dont have a problem. I figure its either something they are eating or whatever they are washed with. Dunno, but glad I can eat eggs again because we go through at least 2.5 dozen a week now!!

Andrea, my FIL feeds his chickens hot oatmeal in the winter so they keep laying, just a little advice

ours are usually the brown organic eggs from our grocery brand(they get them somewhat local). other than that we bum and buy from friends with chickens and at the farmers markets. :) we go through quite a few eggs per week!
