Re: What do you do for someone when they have cancer?

Not flowers. A card with a personal note would be an excellent choice, not just now but continuing down the road. So would a local takeout place gift card or, if you know her well enough, the offer of a frozen meal (so she can use it at her convenience). Super soft bed socks. A very lightweight flee...

Re: Sam's Club or Costco?

I think CR rates Costco over Sam's. I don't belong to either but have shopped in both a number of times, and I like Costco better. Also, from a more philosophical level, Costco gets very good marks as an ethical company and outstanding employer, whereas Sam's is less so.

Re: Is Anyone Presbyterian?

Hanging around with your own child definitely should not be a problem...quite the opposite (although some kids do better without their parents around, but that is a different matter). It is having volunteers--which is what I thought you were--who are new and unknown. Churches are open and trusting, ...

Re: Old dogs

The thing that came to mind for me in terms of the growling, incontinence, etc, is simply pain. She, too, is tired and hurting :( Maybe that is not the case if the meds didn't help, but maybe it wasn't enough or the right kind. As long as she doesn't chew,do you have an old heating pad or electric b...

Re: Is Anyone Presbyterian?

Eucharist is communion. If you are baptized, you are welcome to receive the blessed bread and wine, both or just one or the other. If you don't want to receive communion, you can still come up to the altar rail, cross your arms across your chest, and the priest will give you a blessing. There are ma...

Re: Is Anyone Presbyterian?

As you might guess, I could say a million things about finding a church home! For the record, the Episcopal Church has female clergy and encourages critical thinking ;-) Give any place a few tries unless it is immediately clear it isn't a good fit. Sundays are not all the same, and you need to see a...

Re: rules on eating and drinking around house

We are pretty lax about it. However, I think that is irrelevant here; it is your house and you get to set the rules!

Dumping cable/using Roku

We are disgusted with the cost of our cable bill and are considering ways to eliminate it while still getting to watch some of the shows we like. We already have Netfilx, and Stephen has a Hulu+ subscription, so that covers a lot. If any of you have gone cable/dish free, how has it worked for you? W...

Jokes needed!

I need 3-4 good jokes for my Easter sermon. They can be sort of corny ones, a bit of a groaner but good for a laugh. I would like at least one knock-knock joke. Something good for 6-9 year olds would be about right. Obviously, no bathroom humor and no innuendo... There are tons of websites with joke...

Re: Burst eardrum?

Ditto for Stephen, a couple times when he was little. He had tons of fairly sudden pain each time before it burst, but then the pressure was relieved. His ear healed up fine. We were given abx, but I don't even know if that is still the protocol; this was nearly 15 years ago.

Re: Kids in College - computer, laptop, ipad ?

Sarah's going to CU-Boulder. We called them and they said it's about 50/50, half use Ipads and half use laptops. :? So we left the choice up to Sarah and she chose the laptop. Just talking yesterday with one of the 12th graders at church, and Boulder is one of his top two choices. Sounds like a gre...

Re: High school honors courses?

Esther, FWIW, I know two high school calculus teachers, one the head of the department. Despite the primary class they teach being calc, both say they think students are better off taking statistics than calculus unless they absolutely know that they are planning to head into engineering. Just somet...

Re: High school honors courses?

Going back to your question about the math class...in our jr high, about 85% of 7th graders are in pre-algebra and the rest in what is called 7th grade math, with one class of 30 students in algebra. To be considered for that one class, you had to have the recommendation of your 6th grade math teach...

Re: High school honors courses?

In our 2000 student high school, honors courses basically don't exist; it is AP or regular. Enrollment in AP courses is quite limited, and the teachers pretty much have to teach to the test. There also tends, at least here, to be a lot of summer reading and writing for the AP courses, to the extent ...

Re: What do they "level" at your middle school?

Andrew's 7th/8th grade junior high has teams, but there it seems to work very well. Aside from math (well, orchestra & band too, but in academics), everyone is getting the same material in mixed ability groups. At the high school, there are AP classes--very limited in enrollment--plus one honors...

Re: Kids in College - computer, laptop, ipad ?

I have a typewriter in one of our closets. I toy with getting rid of it,and then I picture a power outage with a sermon the next day...much easier to preach from a typed manuscript than handwritten notes!

Re: Printer/Scanner Suggestions

Take a look on newegg.com ; they have good prices, but they also often have helpful user reviews. The thing that kills me no matter what the brand is the cost of the ink  We have a Canon Pixma which I like, and an HP Colorsmart (?) that is a PITB, especially wireless. Can't recall the model on ...

Re: Spinoff Deux: Smartphone=how old?

Now the youngest, sigh. 8th grade, and a lot of her friends have iphones. I think it is crazy. Not to mention, she has an itouch, which does everything she wants, except be a phone. And she has a phone. I'm not paying extra when the itouch is free. She's argued and argued, but we are not giving in....
